Adjustable Suspended Shelf ::: Melissa

I wanted to come up with a shelf that could be used to display items while really letting them 'pop' out from the wall. I happened to have several old 8x10 frames I wasn't using, and thought the glass could be repurposed for this project.

Total project cost: $8.10.

Materials:

Sander

Sandpaper

Black spray paint

3 - 8' 1x4s

1 - 8' Furring Strip

2 - 16" Strap ties

White paint

3 or more pieces of 8x10 glass

I made sure to pick out the ugliest pine 1x4's I could find. This step made the distressing process much easier.

I cut each of them in half and began sanding the corners (old wood never had clean cuts).

 I hammered nails into the wood, and hit the pieces with the end of a screwdriver.

Next, I lay the wood face down onto a table. I pulled some scrap 1x2 pieces from my pile and cut them to the approximate length. Carefully, I placed pieces of glass between each of the 1x4's. Holding the wood very tight together I screwed through the 1x2's into the 1x4's using 1 1/4" screws.

   

Then, I turned the wood over and added my stamps.

Using a combination of old stains (which I found later I did not like), I stained the project.

I lightly painted my strap ties black and used 1" nails to attach them.

When I was finished I added two 'pop tops' to the back for hanging.

I later came back and white washed the project to get some of the red colors out.

The end result is a wall hanging that with movable glass shelves to display lightweight items that almost appear to float off the wall.

The glass can be slid to any position, and between any two sections of wood. If needed, more shelves could also be added by simply sliding in another piece of glass.
